The Neil Murphy Sailing Trust came as a result of the loss of a great friend, partner, sailor, colleague and teacher. He was the consummate gentleman and all round good guy!

Neil Murphy

Neil and his partner Maddie took up sailing and rapidly grew to live for the sport, spending virtually every weekend up at Glenridding Sailing Centre on Ullswater in the Lake District. It was only natural, therefore, that when Neil was tragically killed in an accident in 2011, many of his friends and family were keen to donate money to a charity Maddie had talked about starting in his name.

Neil started out life as a teacher and it came as no surprise that sailing simply wasn’t enough – he wanted to share his love and had qualified as a sailing instructor shortly before his death.

Maddie has started the Trust to provide funding for young people who might not ordinarily be exposed to sailing. The Trust offers funding for entry level sailors ie those who have never been sailing, to gain their first level qualifications. The Trust focuses its funding on those young people who might be described as disadvantaged, discriminated against, vulnerable and youth offenders.
